Having a passion for Aboriginal art for more than a decade Tony Straccia has been an avid collector and recently launched Indigenu enabling this
collection to be viewed, sold today and into the future. In the main Tony has formed relationships with preferred artists and has included members of prominent artistic families – Pwerle, Napangardi, Brumby and Kngwarreye with some spanning a decade.
In some instances he supports artists when they have been required to travel to Adelaide for medical treatment. Painting enables these artists to have some additional income while they are in Adelaide and the additional costs that come with medical treatment and the Adelaide lifestyle.
Tony purchases the works from the directly from the artists and arranges exhibitions and events to support their work. Indigenu provides art work at the lower end of the art market as Tony is keener on having these beautiful works displayed and the culture shared, rather than goals of profit and status. In addition to supporting individual artists, Tony also travels to the Red Centre for the annual ‘Desert Mob’ event where artists from the region congregate for a massive art sale, its also a lot of fun apart from the scorching heat! These trips also give him the opportunity to meet and adopt new artists. In 2008 Tony met Gracie Morton Pwerle and continues to communicate and acquire work from her. Rummaging through piles and piles of paintings to find those that appeal is very much part of the experience.
In addition to supporting Indigenous art and culture he also serves as a volunteer at the annual Spirit Festival, where the richness of Aboriginal culture is shared and enjoyed by the people of Adelaide.
